‘America’s Best Math Whiz’ to Speak at Ashland University

3/16/18 ASHLAND, Ohio – Dr. Arthur Benjamin, who is known as a “Mathemagician” and has been called “America’s Best Math Whiz,” will speak at Ashland University on Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in Hugo Young Theatre located in the Center for the Arts off College Avenue on the AU campus.

The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a question-and-answer session and book signing. The event is sponsored by the Honors Program at Ashland University.

Benjamin, the Smallwood Family professor of mathematics at Harvey Mudd College, is both a professor of mathematics and a magician. He has combined his two loves to create a dynamic presentation called “Mathemagics,” suitable for all audiences, where he demonstrates and explains his secrets for performing rapid mental calculations faster than a calculator. He has presented his high energy talk for thousands of groups throughout the world.

Benjamin, who is a native of Cleveland and an alumnus of Mayfield High School, demonstrates and explains his abilities to the audience, and among the many feats of mind that he demonstrates includes: How to mentality multiply enormous numbers (faster than a calculator); how to memorize a 100-digit number; how to figure the day of the week of anyone’s birthday, and much more.  

He has appeared on many television and radio programs, including the Today Show, CNN, The Colbert Report and National Public Radio. He has been profiled in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, USA Today, Scientific American, Discover, Omni, Esquire, Wired, People Magazine and Reader’s Digest, which calls him “America’s Best Math Whiz.”

Benjamin has given three TED Talks, one of which has been viewed over five million times. He received the Haimo Distinguished Teaching Award from the Mathematical Association of America in 2000, which is the highest teaching award given by the MAA; was selected by The Princeton Review as one of The Best 300 Professors in 2012; and was the American Backgammon Tour Player of the Year in 1997.
