The four Ashland University nursing students who are recipients of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation scholarships are (l-r) Julie Park, Chikaodi Oti, James Lower and Ben Boerner.

11/8/13 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University’s Dwight Schar College of Nursing and Health Sciences has been selected as a grant recipient of the prestigious Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) New Careers in Nursing Scholarship Program (NCIN) and four AU students -- Julie Park, Chikaodi Oti, James Lower and Ben Boerner – are recipients of the scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Boerner, of Lexington, Ohio, is majoring in nursing. He is the son of Becky Cashell of Lexington. Boerner is a 2008 graduate of Lexington High School.

Lower, of Mount Vernon, Ohio, is majoring in nursing. He is the son of Norman and Loretta Lower of Mount Vernon. Lower is a 2008 graduate of Mount Vernon High School.

Park, of Northbrook, Ill., is majoring in nursing. She is the daughter of Jung Youl and Sung Ki Park of Northbrook, Ill. Park is a 2004 graduate of Glenbrook North High School.

Oti, of Columbus, Ohio, is majoring in nursing.

NCIN is a program of RWJF and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). Each NCIN Scholar has already earned a bachelor’s degree in another field, and is making a career switch to nursing through an accelerated nursing degree program. An accelerated nursing program prepares students to pass the licensure exam required for all registered nurses in as little as 12-18 months.

In addition to a $10,000 scholarship, NCIN scholars receive other support to help them meet the demands of an accelerated degree program. All NCIN grantee schools maintain a leadership program and a mentoring program for their scholars, as well as a pre-entry immersion program to help scholars learn study, test-taking, and other skills that will help them manage the challenges of an accelerated program.
