July 28, 2014 ASHLAND, Ohio – Dr. Douglas Fiore, dean of the Dwight Schar College of Education at Ashland University, has been named the University’s interim provost for the 2014-2015 academic year.
The announcement of the appointment was made to campus this morning by Dr. William Crothers, interim president of the University.
“I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees has confirmed my appointment of Dr. Douglas Fiore as interim provost for the 2014-15 year effective August 1,” Crothers said in an email to faculty and staff on campus.
“I want to thank everyone who nominated individuals, participated in the screening or met with me to discuss the possibilities. Ashland is blessed with some amazing people,” Crothers said. “I have been so impressed by the people I had the privilege of interviewing. All of them could do the job of provost, which made my decision even more difficult. I intend to continue to seek their input as we serve at Ashland this year.”
Crothers said this will not be a typical year at Ashland University.
“We are facing some unique challenges. Dr. Fiore has had a variety of leadership experiences which will serve him well as together we prepare the University for the future,” he said. “I believe he has the right experience, philosophy of education and leadership skills to help us position the University for success.”
Retiring Provost Dr. Frank Pettigrew will be available to Dr. Fiore as a consultant during the fall semester. This transition will occur later this week.
Crothers said Ashland University also will be appointing an acting dean for the College of Education soon. “Dr. Fiore will continue to help shape a vision for the College of Education as he works with the acting dean,” he said.
Fiore, who began his duties as dean of the Dwight Schar College of Education on June 1 of this year, came to Ashland University from Virginia State University where he served as associate provost for extended education for the past year. He served as assistant provost for general and continuing education, professor of educational leadership and dean of the Doctor of Education Program since joining Virginia State University in 2006.
Fiore also served as director of the Office of Professional Practice at the Virginia Department of Education in 2005 and 2006, and was principal at South Anna Elementary School from 2003 to 2005.
In addition to his administrative positions, Fiore has served on the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University and State University of West Georgia. He recently completed a yearlong fellowship through the American Council on Education (ACE), which provided him a great educational experience in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
Fiore has a doctor of philosophy in educational administration from Indiana State University, a master of science in education from Purdue University and a bachelor of arts from Hofstra University.
Fiore has written numerous publications, including books on school-community relations, educational administration standards, and supervising and evaluating instruction. He serves as a researcher for Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium, as well as a reviewer for Contemporary Education, Research in Middle Level Education and NASSP Bulletin.
He also maintains professional affiliations with the American Council on Education, the American Educational Research Association, the Association for the Advancement of Educational Research, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, the Society for College and University Planning and the University Continuing Education Association.
