Ashland University College of Nursing Alumni Hold Annual Banquet

7/12/11 ASHLAND, OH -- The Ashland University Dwight Schar College of Nursing alumni held their annual banquet in June with approximately 90 members and guests in attendance.

The earliest graduate in attendance was Helen Wappner from the Class of 1936. The most recent graduate was Becky Mangas of the Class of 2009.  Members attended from a variety of states, including California, Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Texas and Virginia.

A buffet dinner was served followed by a short business meeting during which Susan Ehret Baker from the Class of 1965 was elected secretary. Since the nursing alumni now function under the AU Alumni Association, Rules of Order were developed and approved to replace the Constitution.

The alumni presented four scholarships to current nursing students and these students were selected based on essays they wrote describing a critical moment in their educational experience.

Traditional students awarded scholarships were: Michaela Phillians of Caledonia, $2,000; Addie Runkle of Hayesville, $1,000; and Kelly Hudak of Mansfield, $1,000. The RN to BSN student who received a $500 scholarship was Sarah Koehler of Ashland.

The Alumni Wall of Fame inductees were announced and these nurses were nominated for the honor based on their nursing career accomplishments and their work with the nursing alumni association. This year the inductees were Connie Nelson Gouge, Class of 1959, and Judy Greer Davis, Class of 1965. Their pictures will be placed on the Alumni Wall at the College of Nursing.

Also during the program, the 50-year and 25-year classes were recognized and presented gifts.  There were 17 members of the 1961 class who attended and they memorialized the 10 members of the class who are deceased. Those attending were Marilynn Altvater, Martha Scheerer Hall Andersen, Judith MacCallum Benton, Patricia Repp Kellogg, Nancy Cooke-Kolbe, Judy Jordan Lister, Eleanor Howey Loeliger, Sue Martin, Ann Hoban Normant, Judith Sellers Pearson, Gloria Schie Roth, Janet Augenbaugh Schemine, Susan Schwaner Paszko, Jean Huber Semonoff, Wilma Sue Karns Shaw, Joy Grogg Varner and Patricia Evans Weiland.

There was one member of the 1986 class in attendance -- Kimberly Fleishner Keyes.

The group gives special honors to the 50-year and 25-year classes each year and their class picture hangs on the Alumni Wall at the College of Nursing during the following year.

Faye Grund, dean of the Dwight Schar College of Nursing, and Jeff Alix, director of Alumni and Parent Relations, attended the banquet and offered comments about the college and the nursing alumni.
