4/11/13 ASHLAND, Ohio - Matthew Portner, an Ashland resident and director of auxiliary services at Ashland University, was awarded an Executive Juris Doctor degree with Highest Honors on March 2 in Los Angeles, during a commencement ceremony for Concord Law School of Kaplan University.

In addition to graduating with highest honors, Portner distinguished himself among his classmates by receiving Dean’s List honors twice and Distinguished Scholar honors once during his studies at Concord. He also received the EJD Legal Analysis and Writing Excellence in Writing Award in December of 2012. Finally, at the graduation ceremony on March 2, Portner was awarded the EJD Academic Excellence Award for the student with the highest grade point average among the winter graduates.

The graduating class included 59 graduates of the Juris Doctor program, 34 earning Executive Juris Doctor degrees and four earning LLM degrees.

The Executive Juris Doctor Program is a three-year, part-time program designed for students who plan to use their legal education to enhance their current career but who do not intend to practice law. In his case, Portner plans to use his legal education to improve effectiveness in areas of human resources and risk management.

“For over a decade now, Concord Law School has helped define the future of legal education by making it accessible and affordable for working professionals seeking to attain a professional law degree,” said Greg Brandes, Concord’s dean. “Matthew, like many Concord students, led a highly professional career while studying for the law. Concord fills a significant need in legal education by providing students like Matthew with an opportunity to get a rigorous legal education without having to put their careers on hold. It enables many to fulfill their dreams of giving back to the community or making a significant contribution to the legal profession.”

Portner has worked at Ashland University for 21 years. He and his wife, Debbie, have three children: Tyler, Zach, and Alexis.
