4/15/13 ASHLAND, Ohio - The Ashland University Coburn Gallery and Art Club will be hosting a gallery talk titled “Conscious Surrealism-Revisited” with senior art major Mauricio Uranga on Wednesday, April 17, from 12 to 12:50 p.m. in the Coburn Art Gallery. Lunch will be provided by the gallery.
Uranga said his talk will focus on how he manipulates symbols, light, colors and the compositions of the paintings to create a story in a viewer’s mind.
“My paintings are creations of my conscious mind inspired by subconscious ideas. Each painting is a scene from the movie of my life. I select ideas that form part of who I am; for example, where I have lived and traveled to, how my swimming career started, the process of how I solve problems, how I learn and pass new skills, etc.,” Uranga said. “The result of my choices is a combination of intentional and unintentional elements that I call ‘conscious surrealism.’ Because viewers have memories from their own experiences, they will all have different interpretations of the reasoning behind the symbols. They can create their own narrative using the paintings as starting thoughts.”
Uranga was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, and attended Ashland University because of AU’s swimming program. He is a double major in commercial art and fine arts, with two minors in entrepreneurship and French.
Uranga is the record holder in the 200 backstroke and 800 freestyle relay. He served as AU swim team captain for the 2012-2013 season and was a finalist at the Mexican time trials in the 100 backstroke. He serves as program director of the Honor Society of Phi Sigma Iota and through AU’s program will be attending the Art Institute of Pittsburgh next fall.
