Ashland University to Host Presentation on Foreign Service Career Opportunities

1/8/14 ASHLAND, Ohio – The Ashland University College of Arts and Sciences will host a presentation Jan. 23 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Founders Hall Seminar Room for those who are interested in learning more about career opportunities in the U.S. Foreign Service.

"This session is for students or those in the community who have wondered about working overseas or are intrigued by the duties of a U.S. diplomat,” said Dr. Cindy Moseman, assistant dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Following Ambassador Susan Jacob’s (special adviser for the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Children's Issues) recent visit to campus. I was contacted by a foreign service officer about coming to campus to share career opportunities in the U.S. Foreign Service.”

Moseman said the event will feature a presentation on the Foreign Service Officer Test (FSOT) by Dr. Michelle Jones, a diplomat-in-residence. Jones taught at Muskingum College in Ohio before joining the Foreign Service and she has served in Poland, Bangladesh, Trinidad, Canada and most recently in Afghanistan.

As diplomat-in-residence for the North Central U.S., she covers Michigan, Ohio and Kentucky as a “talent scout” for the U.S. Department of State, visiting career fairs, information sessions and university classrooms.

“The officer test is given three times a year and is a key component for entry into the U.S. Foreign Service,” Moseman said. “Dr. Jones will describe the test format and strategies for study, and also will answer questions about career opportunities including internships, fellowships, and civil and foreign service positions.”

A special guest for the event will be Kelly Hunt of Ohio, who was a public affairs officer for the U.S Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
