Ashland University Music Department Prepares For Busy Sunday of Faculty and Senior Recitals

11/3/10 ASHLAND, OH -- The Department of Music at Ashland University is preparing for a busy Sunday afternoon and evening full of faculty and senior recitals scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 14, in the Elizabeth Pastor Recital Hall.

The afternoon will begin at 3 p.m. with a senior vocal recital by soprano Aly Slotterbeck followed at 5 p.m. with another senior recital by trombonist James Slike. The 7:30 p.m. evening performance will feature a faculty recital by flutist Jane Berkner assisted by Kim Bakkum, piano and Tom Reed, clarinet. All of the concerts are free and open to the public.

Soprano Aly Slotterbeck will be accompanied by Megan Barth, piano, and Jake Kinney, baritone, for her recital. She will perform songs by Mozart, Bellini, Strauss, Povlenc and Puccini. Aly is a vocal music education major from Elmore, Ohio, and 2007 graduate of Woodmore High School.

Also accompanied by pianist Megan Barth, trombonist, James Slike will host guest instrumentalists John Grimm and Chris Simmons. His recital will feature works by Monaco, Frackenpohl, Pryor and more.  James is a 2007 graduate of Lake Catholic High School from Mentor, Ohio, majoring in music education.

Jane Berkner's faculty recital will feature music by Arthur Foote, Michel Blavet, Malcolm Arnold and Carl Reneicke. As a member of music faculties at Ashland University and the University of Akron, Berkner was on the Ohio Touring Artist's Roster from 1992 to 2009, first with the flute and harp duo Berkner & Bell and later as a solo artist, performing in recital series and school concerts across the state.

She has performed with the Akron, Ashland, Canton and Youngstown symphonies, the Ohio Ballet Orchestra, O'Neil Chamber Players and the Chamber Music Society of Ohio. Her major teachers include Geoffrey Gilbert, George Pope, Martha Aarons and Jeffrey Khaner.

She has performed and presented workshops for National Flute Association conventions in Atlanta, Washington D.C., Pittsburgh and Chicago, and was assistant to the Program Chair of the NFA in 2000. From 2001 to 2006, she was coordinator of the National Flute Association's High School Flute Choir. She is director of the Northeastern Ohio Flute Association's Flute Ensembles and the University of Akron Flute Ensemble, and the director of a Flute Choir Camp for adults at the Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Berkner has been performing concerts with pianist Kim Bakkum since 1997. They released a CD together in 2007, and performed in Sere Musicale and Corofest in Assisi, Italy in 2008. She also performed in Musica dal Mondo - Perugia and Voci e Organi dell'Appennino in Emilia Romagna along with guitarist Stephen Aron and Soprano JoNell Aron. She returned to Italy in the summer of 2010 as the director of the University of Akron Flute Ensemble.

From 1996 to 2001, Berkner was founder and flutist of the O'Neil House Concert Series, and since 2004 has been the executive director for music at the Farmstead, a summer festival concert series in Akron, Ohio. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Arts Presenters Network.
