Ashland University Receives Gift from A. Schulman Inc.; Establishes William Zekan Endowed Chair

8/4/15 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University has received a gift from A. Schulman Inc., based in Fairlawn, to complete the establishment of the William C. Zekan Endowed Chair in Business Administration at Ashland University. A. Schulman Inc. has been a world leader in plastics and resins since 1928.

Bill Zekan served as chairman and president of A. Shulman Inc. and was a former trustee at Ashland University before his death in 1991.

The endowed chair, titled the A. Schulman Inc. for William C. Zekan Chair of Business Administration, will enhance Ashland University’s business administration program. The endowment will provide funding for a distinguished faculty member to continue scholarly excellence through contributions to teaching, research and public service.

“This endowed chair greatly honors Bill Zekan and A. Schulman’s long-standing partnership with Ashland University,” stated A. Schulman’s Chairman Joseph M. Gingo. “Through this commitment, we will further our goal to support education and public service and create a foundation that we hope will inspire today's students to become tomorrow’s leaders.”

Dr. Dan Lawson, associate vice president of institutional advancement at AU, said Ashland University is a leader in promoting business and economic education among private institutions of higher education in Ohio and has a long history with A. Schulman Inc.

“We are proud to maintain this time-honored relationship for the mutual benefit of A. Schulman Inc. and its employees, as well as Ashland University,” Lawson said.

Lawson said holding an endowed chair is considered an academic honor. “The endowed position brings a great deal of prestige to the university and enhances the field represented by the chair. In addition, investment income from an endowment provides a dependable, perpetual source of funding to support the position, as well as the ability to conduct research and scholarship as new opportunities arise,” he said.

Ashland University is a mid-sized, private university conveniently located a short distance from Akron, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Ashland University (www.ashland.edu) values the individual student and offers a unique educational experience that combines the challenge of strong, applied academic programs with a faculty and staff who build nurturing relationships with their students.
