Ashland University Sets Workshop for Team Captains

2/16/17 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University has joined with the Florida organization "Student ACES" to offer its first-ever workshop designed specifically for high school athletic team captains. The workshop is set for Friday, March 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Troop Center on the AU campus.

“We realize that it takes particular leadership skills to become a team captain,” said AU President Dr. Carlos Campo. “Because we are always trying to recruit students who are leaders, this proven program seemed like a perfect fit for our campus. Our hope is that it will prove successful, and be a part of our ongoing recruitment strategy in the future.”

Former NFL fullback Donnell Bennet Jr. will be the keynote speaker for the March event. Lunch is provided, and the event is free of charge.

“Captains will have the unique opportunity to hear from current sports administrators and former pro-athletes to learn leadership skills and life lessons that will inspire them to become strong leaders,” Dr. Campo said. “They also will connect with captains from other local high schools in an interactive environment.”

The schedule for the day includes a welcome at 8:30 a.m. followed by the keynote address from Bennett at 9 a.m. This will be followed by a team building activity at 9:20 a.m. and a session on Captain Roles and Responsibilities at 10:15. Following the noon lunch, a session on Qualities of a Captain will be held.

Dr. Campo indicated that he and one of Ashland University's team captains will travel to Florida annually to present at a workshop for Florida athletes. This year, senior football standout Brandon Gency of Streetsboro will represent AU captains, and the plan is to rotate AU sports every year.

The “Student ACES” is a non-profit organization and its mission is "to inspire, train and mentor a community of Student ACES who exemplify leadership traits in athletics, community service and education."
