Ashland University Student Art Exhibition to Open March 12

Ashland University Student Art Exhibition to Open March 12

2/27/15 ASHLAND, Ohio – The Ashland University Juried Student Art Exhibition will open on Thursday, March 12, in the University’s Coburn Gallery with a reception to be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

This exhibition will offer $1,300 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Everett S. Caldemeyer Award, Dean’s Award, People’s Choice Award and awards in each of the seven art areas: painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital media, graphic design, drawing and ceramics. The awards ceremony will begin at 5 p.m.

The exhibition runs from March 12 to April 1. A generous donation from former faculty member Charles Caldemeyer and Dr. Dawn Weber, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as other private donors has allowed the University to offer several of these awards.

The annual exhibition represents a culmination of student work from university art classes during the school year. It is an opportunity for art students to take their best artwork from the year, learn how to professionally present it for display and then receive feedback from an outside art professional.

The outside juror for the exhibition is John Hunting Hansen, who is a studio technician and adjunct assistant professor for the College of Wooster. He received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Sculpture from the University of Iowa.

Hansen’s creative work explores the relationships of waste as material and as a human condition. He has shown his work around the country. Hansen has been in group exhibitions at Ashland University, Capital University, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Arizona State University, Northwest Missouri State University and Beloit College. He has been in solo and two-person shows at the University of Minnesota, Quad City Art Center, Charles H. MacNider Art Museum and the University of Iowa.

The exhibition is an excellent opportunity to support the arts by purchasing a student artwork, whether you are just starting to collect art or adding to a collection. The Coburn Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Sat/Sun.
