Ashland University Student Defends His Ashbrook Thesis

After graduation, Zimmerman will be pursuing a Master of Science degree in Analytics from North Carolina State University.

5/3/13 ASHLAND, Ohio – Hilliard resident Marc Zimmerman, who is a senior at Ashland University, defended his Ashbrook thesis this semester and is starting at North Carolina State University in the fall in its graduate analytics program.

Zimmerman is a political science and economics major at Ashland University. After graduation he will be pursuing a Master of Science degree in Analytics from North Carolina State University where he plans to graduate and eventually work at a large company analyzing data.

The official title of Zimmerman’s thesis was “The Political Economy of Per Capita GDP.”

“(My thesis is about) determining to what extent various political variables impacted the wealth of countries,” Zimmerman said. In order to figure this out, he used a multivariate regression analysis with 11 independent variables.

Zimmerman’s thesis allowed him to utilize the skills he had learned in his Business Analytics class, as well as the knowledge he had accumulated in his political science/economics degrees at Ashland University. He said his thesis also allowed him to prepare for work he will be doing in graduate school.

His defense presentation lasted about 35 minutes. Four professors were on Zimmerman’s panel and four additional professors went to the defense.

“I spent three full weeks preparing for the defense because it was something that I was passionate about and I wanted to produce the best presentation possible,” Zimmerman said.

The defense received positive feedback and many of the professors said it was one of the best undergraduate presentations they had ever seen.

“Marc is an excellent student who took full advantage of the great opportunities at Ashland University,” said Mark A. Nadler, Zimmerman’s advisor. “He applied what he learned to better understand poverty in the world. Marc’s accomplishments are available to all undergraduate students at Ashland University. He is one of many examples at the university of students who accomplish great things and in Marc’s case, his research has led to acceptance in a master’s program in Analytics.”

Zimmerman, who is a graduate of Hilliard Darby High School, is the son of Marc and Alice Zimmerman of Hilliard.
