Ashland University Theatre Experience Invites High School Students to Discover Their Passion

10/21/14 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University Department of Theatre invites high school students to discover their passion at a theatre experience opportunity on Saturday, Nov. 8, beginning at 2 p.m. The event is free and open to any high school student interested in learning more about theatre at Ashland University.

Registration is due by Nov. 1 with limited spaces available. Participants can register online at www.ashland.edu/theatre or by contacting Sarah Russell at srussel6@ashland.edu or 419.289.5150.

At “Discover Your Passion,” high school students will spend an afternoon and evening with the Ashland University Theatre Department’s faculty and students. Participants will learn the skills necessary for a college audition or interview; explore both performance and design through workshops led by Ashland faculty; attend the premiere of “In the Event of My Death,” a new play written for Ashland University Theatre; and socialize and dine with current theatre students. They can also have the total AU experience with an overnight stay in a residence hall.

Attendees can elect to participate in one of the following acting workshops and one of the design workshops led by AU theatre faculty. Acting workshops include “PANIC! Auditioning and Interviewing for University Theatre Programs” led by alumnus Shane O'Neill, and “Behind the Scenes of ‘In the Event of My Death,’ The Premiere of a new play written for Ashland University” with director Scott Hudson. In O'Neill’s workshop, he will discuss and explore what makes a great audition and interview, what materials you need to collect and prepare and how to present them. He will show students how to craft a professional theatrical resume and can also critique monologues or songs that students may have. Hudson’s workshop will engage students in the work and development of this original play from a New York City-based and emerging playwright. Cast, crew and production members will demonstrate and share this unique and extraordinary process.

Design workshop offerings include “Painting: The Big Picture” with Assistant Professor Jason Coale and “Beat Down! Creating wounds and bruises with stage makeup” with Assistant Professor Sarah Russell. Coale will demonstrate some of the classic techniques used to paint a set such as scumbling and rag roll along with a few of the obscure ones. Russell will experiment with different makeup techniques as participants learn how to use crème colors, liquid latex and other household items to create fun and creepy special effect makeup.
