AU G.I.V.S. Organization Seeks Requests for Service Projects

3/5/15 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University’s AU G.I.V.S. (Ashland University Gets Involved with Volunteer Service) organization is inviting Ashland area non-profit organizations and businesses to submit a “Call for Action” application requesting volunteers and/or assistance.

“We are looking for non-profit organizations and businesses who want assistance in accomplishing a project, task or service initiative during the 2015-16 academic year, specifically September through early December or January through April,” said Jennifer Washock, director of orientation and community service at Ashland University.

Washock said AU G.I.V.S. is seeking requests for projects or tasks in an effort to help the group establish its events schedule for fall of 2015 and spring of 2016. Those who are interested in submitting a project or service initiative can complete an online application at www.ashland.edu/augivs. The deadline to submit applications is Friday, March 20

“Ideal partnerships will have a focus related to one of our areas of service that includes Senior Citizens, Environmental/Sustainability efforts, Hunger and Homelessness Relief, Animal Welfare, Youth and Children, Education and Literacy, and Veteran/Military Families,” Washock said. “These projects, tasks or initiatives should be able to be completed in the late afternoon or evening on weekdays or on weekends, and have the potential to involve 30 to 60-plus volunteers.”

Past partnerships and events have included both direct service projects such as "The Princess's Closet" and indirect service initiatives such as "Project Linus" and "Holiday Mail for Heroes." Selected projects/initiatives will be assigned to two AU G.I.V.S. student event chairs, who will work with the organization or business to develop project details and then recruit and coordinate AU volunteers.

“The goal of AU G.I.V.S. is to get more involved in the Ashland community and continue to build stronger relationships among AU students and the Ashland community,” Washock said.

The mission of AU G.I.V.S. (Ashland University Gets Involved In Volunteer Service) is to provide Ashland University, including students, faculty and staff, with service opportunities to expand their social and educational experiences as well as create an atmosphere of committed lifelong service to others and an understanding of social responsibility and civic engagement in the following areas: Senior Citizens, Environmental/Sustainability efforts,  Hunger and Homelessness Relief, Animal Welfare, Youth and Children, Education and Literacy, and Veteran/Military Families.
