AU to Host Chemistry Camp for Middle Grade Students

4/25/12 ASHLAND, Ohio -- Ashland University will host a Chemistry Can Be Fun Camp, a laboratory experience for middle grade students entering grades 7-9 in the fall, offered with the Institute for Chemical Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Sessions will be held June 11-14 from 9 a.m. to noon each day at Ashland University’s Kettering Science Center.

This camp is for students with an interest in science who can work at grade level and at a moderately independent level. Students will be kept busy for the three hours, but they do need to be able to work efficiently and safely in a laboratory setting.

Participants will learn the properties of common elements, learn how atoms and molecules combine to form all kinds of new substances, including those that are brittle or flexible, colored or clear, and solid, liquid or gas.

The material covered in this year’s camp will differ from material covered in last year’s camp. Alumni are welcome to attend and enrollment will be capped at 15.

The cost to enroll in the Chemistry Can Be Fun Camp is $70. A $20 discount will be offered this year for multiple children in the same family, for a child whose sibling has attended a previous year or for a camp alumnus. A few scholarships are available for those who document need.

Registration and payment is required by May 30 and information and registration materials may be obtained by calling Brenda Rodeback at 419-289-5261 or by emailing Dr. Matt Arthur, professor of chemistry, at marthur@ashland.edu. An on-line brochure/registration form is available at: https://personal.ashland.edu/marthur/mlaice_files/ccbf_2012_ann_text.htm
