Dr. Carlos Campo to be Part of Event to Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Betty Clooney

9/21/17 ASHLAND, Ohio – King Studios and The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County are hosting an event to celebrate the life and legacy of Betty Clooney, “Ohio’s Adopted Girl Singer.”

The event will be held Sunday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. in Cincinnati’s Main Library Atrium, 800 Vine St. in downtown Cincinnati.

The event will feature Betty Clooney’s brother, Nick Clooney, and her son, Dr. Carlos Campo, who now serves as president of Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio, discussing the life and career of this talented and spirited performer and sister of singer Rosemary Clooney.

Beginning her professional singing career at age 14 on Cincinnati’s WLW Radio, Betty Clooney was soon touring America and recording with her sister, Rosemary, as a duo for bandleader Tony Pastor. Tired of the road after a few years, she returned to Cincinnati to become a pioneer in early television. While still a teenager, she hosted her own shows Teen Canteen and Boy Meets Girl on WLWT while also performing as the vocalist for Ruth Lyons 50-50 Club. She began recording as a solo artist in 1950 for King Records as part of that company’s attempt to break into the pop music market. Later, she signed with RCA and Coral Records while working on several national network TV programs including The Morning Show with Jack Paar for CBS. Betty gave up her career to concentrate on raising her four children. Tragically, she died at age 45.

This event is offered as part of the King Records’ 74th Anniversary Celebration. Call 513-369-6900 or visit www.CincinnatiLibrary.org for more information.
