3/29/18 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University Department of Theatre presents the annual showcase concert by the musical theatre revue troupe Drop of a Hat Players on Sunday, April 8, at 2 p.m. in the Studio Theatre in the Center for the Arts. Although the performance is free and open to the public, audience members are encouraged to reserve a free ticket through the Ashland University box office at 419.289.5215 to guarantee a seat in the intimate performance venue.
“A Flash to the Past” is the theme for this year’s showcase, which will focus on the almost 50-year history of Ashland University Theatre by performing selections from musicals performed on the Hugo Young Theatre and Studio Theatre stages. From as far back as 1972 when the department first produced A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with return performances in 1985 and 1993 to as recent as the 2013 production of Little Shop of Horrors, which was previously staged in 1987 -- this year’s troupe of 10 singers will perform a mix of solo and ensemble arrangements.
Classic musical theatre selections from Oliver!, Brigadoon and The Music Man will contrast with more contemporary pieces from Into the Woods, Urinetown: the Musical and Violet. The showcase will offer selections from 18 different musicals.
Advised by Ashland University Assistant Professor of Theatre Robert Sean Parker, members of the Drop of a Hat Players are comprised of junior Kathleen Thompson Parker (Ashland), sophomores Jacob Ellis (Bellevue) and Megan Saupe (Hamilton) along with several freshmen including Gabriella Carr (Pickerington), Hannah Chelle Frye (Danville), AnnMarie Hill (Jeromesville), Mia Kardotzke (Clyde), Emily Schordock (Westlake), Ethan Tingler (Roseville) and David Tomlinson (Sagamore Hills).
Founded in 1991 as an outreach program for the Ashland University Theatre Department, the Drop of a Hat Players provides a performance training opportunity for students as they perform throughout the year at banquets, meetings, parties, civic group engagements or other special events.
