12/18/13 ASHLAND, Ohio - Oswald Judson Tobin III of Columbus was only one of 544 graduates who received a degree from Ashland University on Saturday, Dec. 14, but his story was different than most.

After the nation’s tragedy of 9-11, Tobin enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and he was later deployed to Iraq. During his years of service, he received the Marine Corps Good Conduct medal (2nd award), Iraq Campaign Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Letter of Commendation, Certificate of Commendation, Letter of Appreciation, Certificate of Appreciation, Meritorious Mast, Rifle Expert Badge, Pistol Sharpshooter Badge and Joint Service Army Commendation Medal.

Then, after reaching the rank of sergeant and becoming a Marine Corps martial arts instructor, Tobin was honorably discharged from the Marines and he enrolled at Ashland University to pursue a Master of Business Administration degree. His goal was accomplished in December of 2013 when he walked across the stage to receive his MBA degree in executive management.

Tobin used the Post 911 G.I. Bill, which allowed him to completely acquire this goal with little or no out-of-pocket expenses for schooling. “I speak for myself and many other veterans when I acknowledge the Post 911 Bill and the help that it provides for the people of the United States Armed Forces,” he said.
