Larry M. Aber Memorial Endowed Scholarship Established at Ashland University

3/17/15 ASHLAND, Ohio – The Larry M. Aber Memorial Endowed Scholarship has been established at Ashland University by Larry’s son, Shawn Aber, and his wife, Nichole Aber. The scholarship will be presented annually to a student attending Ashland University from Ashland High School or another Ashland County school.

Shawn Aber, who is a 1999 graduate of Ashland University, is the owner/vice president of Valley Transportation, a steel carrier truck service located in Ashland. Nichole Aber is a 2002 graduate of Walsh University.

“The entire Aber family has always had a passion of assisting and helping the entire community of Ashland and I believe this endowed scholarship is a wonderful way to give back to the community,” Shawn Aber said. “This endowment created in my father's honor will continue in perpetuity assisting students with their educational endeavors.”

According to the endowed scholarship stipulations, the scholarship recipient(s) will be selected on the basis of financial need. First preference will be given to any graduate from Ashland High School. If there is not a qualified candidate from Ashland High School, then the scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student from an Ashland County high school. This scholarship may be renewed annually provided that the recipient(s) is in good standing within the Ashland University community.

AU Interim President Dr. William Crothers said endowed scholarships are important to the success of Ashland University. “We are so pleased that Shawn and his wife, Nichole, have made the decision to provide the funding for an endowed scholarship that will help students be able to attend Ashland University. It is a gift that keeps on giving year after year and will continue to touch students forever,” Crothers said.

Ashland University Endowed Scholarships help to provide deserving students of modest means with an Ashland education, and enrich the Ashland experience by ensuring a diverse student body. Approximately 500 named endowed scholarships have been established since 1980.

When a gift is endowed, the initial principal is invested and awards are made from the annual earnings. This provides a level of current support, while providing a reliable source of funds for the future.

Ashland University is a mid-sized, private university conveniently located a short distance from Akron, Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio. Ashland University (www.ashland.edu) values the individual student and offers a unique educational experience that combines the challenge of strong, applied academic programs with a faculty and staff who build nurturing relationships with their students. ###
