Local Groups to Hold Public Forum on Opioid Epidemic

2/6/18 ASHLAND, Ohio – The Center for Civic Life at Ashland University (CCL), in cooperation with the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Ashland County (MHRB) and the Ashland County Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (ACCADA), will hold a public forum titled, “What Should We Do about the Opioid Epidemic?”

The forum is free and open to the public and is being held at the Ashland Public Library on Feb. 24 at 9:30 a.m. in the Stockwell Room.

While the opioid epidemic is nationwide, Ohio has a pressing reason to be concerned. According to the Ashland Times Gazette of Dec. 22, 2017, Ohio is the second highest in the nation in overdose deaths.

“Our approach is that the opioid epidemic is not just an individual problem, it is also a community problem and solutions must come from us together as citizens,” said Louise Fleming-Dufala, director of CCL. “The format consists of deliberating options – developed by both National Issues Forums and Center for Civic Life – to consider actions that might be taken and potential drawbacks of those actions.”

Fleming-Dufala said community representatives have been invited to participate in the forum and to listen to citizens’ ideas for solving this intractable problem.

“The entire time will be filled with deliberative discussion among participants,” she said. “Additionally, the results of the forum will be made public and will serve as the basis for a series of Community Conversations to expand on the topics that emerge.”
