4/1/15 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland Theological Seminary is sponsoring an “Invitation to Solitude and Silence” with Dr. Ruth Haley Barton of The Transforming Center on May 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Myers Convocation Center on the Ashland University campus. Tickets for the event are $10 and are available at solitudeandsilence.eventbrite.
Transforming Center Spiritual Director Dr. Barton will introduce individuals to a journey into solitude and silence as referenced in her book “Invitation to Solitude and Silence” (InterVarsity Press, 2010). People are encouraged to attend this event with their small groups, Sunday School classes, retreat groups and friends.
“Solitude is the Christian discipline in which we withdraw from our life in the company of others in order to give our full and undivided attention to God,” said Dr. Matthew A. Lewis, director for Excellence in Leadership and assistant professor of Practical Theology at Ashland Theological Seminary. “Silence deepens our experience of solitude as we allow the noise of our own thoughts, strivings and inner compulsions to settle down so we can hear a truer and more reliable Voice -- God himself speaking in the depths of our being.”
Lewis said he has introduced hundreds of pastors, leaders and students to Dr. Barton’s writings over the years. “It will be a real treat to introduce her to our community face-to-face and feast from her wisdom,” Lewis added.
Ashland Theological Seminary is a graduate division of Ashland University. With campuses in Ashland, Detroit, Cleveland and Columbus, Ashland Theological Seminary integrates theological education with Christ-centered transformation as it equips men and women for ministry in the church and the world.
