Dr. Jeff Weidenhamer, trustees' professor of chemistry, participated in a Feb. 23 telephone conference call with senior members of the Consumer Product Safety Commission staff regarding the proposed standard for cadmium in children's jewelry. Work by Dr. Weidenhamer and his students resulted in the first U.S. recalls of jewelry for cadmium contamination, and was featured in a major series of investigative reports by the Associated Press. He is continuing to evaluate analytical methods which can be used to assess the hazards posed by cadmium, lead and other metals in these products.
