Ashland University Welcomes Visiting Professor from Brazil

5/5/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Earlier this semester, Professor Francisco Baima, Ph.D., from Santa Catarina State University located in Florianopolis, Brazil, came to Ashland University to study the finance program at the Dauch College of Business and Economics and expand the relationship between our two universities.

The visit from Baima continues the exchange of both professors and students from Santa Catarina State University that started with the Schar College of Education.

Dr. Thomas Dence Receives Ashland University's Excellence in Scholarship Award

5/4/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Dr. Thomas Dence, professor of mathematics at Ashland University, was honored last week as the University's first recipient of the Ashland University Excellence in Scholarship Award.

Dence received a medallion and a check for $5,000 at the Faculty Scholarship Luncheon on campus. The Ashland University Excellence in Scholarship Award recognizes Ashland University faculty who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship.

Ashland University Students Get Bill Walton to Autograph Basketball

5/3/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland University finance students attending the Redefining Investment Strategy Education (R.I.S.E.) competition, the world's largest student investment forum, had the opportunity to meet former NBA star Bill Walton and have him autograph a basketball.

Walton presented the keynote address that dealt with his leadership and experience at the event, which was held at the University of Dayton in late April.

Ashland University Slates Baccalaureate Service

4/29/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland University will hold a baccalaureate service on the evening prior to its commencement exercises.

Planned by graduating seniors involved in Ashland University's Student Senate and Religious Life ministries, the baccalaureate service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 6, in the University's Jack and Deb Miller Chapel. The event is open to all students and their parents, as well as interested members of the public.

Ashland University's Dr. Jane Piirto Publishes New Book

4/29/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Dr. Jane Piirto, trustees' distinguished professor of education at Ashland University, has published a new book titled "Creativity for 21st Century Skills: How to Embed Creativity into the Curriculum," with Sense Publishers of Rotterdam, Boston, and Taipei.

According to Piirto, the book describes what many creative people really do when they create and focuses on the practical applications of a theoretical approach to creativity training that has been developed by Piirto.

Ashland University Seminary Professor Publishes New Book

4/29/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Dr. Paul W. Chilcote, professor of Historical Theology & Wesleyan Studies at Ashland Theological Seminary, has published a new book titled "Making Disciples in a World Parish: Global Perspectives on Mission & Evangelism" in the Princeton Theological Monograph Series.

In this collection of inspirational and challenging essays, 28 contributors from around the globe reflect on the practice of disciple-making in their own contexts, according to Chilcote.

Deadline Noted for Entries to Ohio All Media Juried Exhibition

4/21/11 ASHLAND, OH -- All entries to Ohio All Media, a regional juried exhibition at Ashland University's Coburn Gallery, must be postmarked by May 2.

The juried exhibition, created as a showcase for Ohio artists working in any media, traditional or experimental, opens on Sunday, June 26, in the Coburn Gallery at Ashland University. There will be an opening reception on June 26 from 2 to 4 p.m., with the awards presented at 3 p.m.

The exhibit will run through Aug. 5, 2011.

Ashland University Chef a Finalist in Food Contest

4/21/11 ASHLAND, OH -- Kevin T. Burke, executive sous chef at Ashland University, is a finalist in the Gordon Food Service's "The Main Ingredient" recipe contest and also has entered a recipe in the national "Recipe Showdown" sponsored by Rotel.

Burke, a chef in the Student Dining area at Ashland University, calls his GFS entry "pesto sundried tomato cornbread." The pesto's ingredients include sundried tomatoes, asiago cheese, ricotta cheese, and shallots.
