Dr. Beth Patton

Dr. Beth Patton, associate professor of exercise science and physical education, joined Ashland University in 1998. Her area of expertise includes fitness assessment and exercise prescription, group exercise instruction, tests and measurements in physical education, and supervision. Dr. Patton serves as the chair for Schar College of Education Curriculum Committee and faculty advisor for the Exercise Science Majors Club. She serves as a National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) STARS reviewer and auditor and is currently secretary for the Midwest district of the American Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. She is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Physical Best Specialist and certified Group Fitness Instructor. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education (K-12) and Masters of Science degree in exercise physiology from the University of Akron and a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction: Health Education from Kent State University.

Dr. Lance Kaltenbaugh

Dr. Lance Kaltenbaugh, associate professor of sport management, joined Ashland University in 2000. His areas of expertise include campus recreation and therapeutic recreation. He received the Academic Mentor Award in 2006 and has been nominated as the Outstanding Male Faculty Member in 2007. Dr. Kaltenbaugh serves as the internship coordinator for the sport management and exercise sciences majors. He has a Bachelor of Education and Master of Education degrees in therapeutic recreation and recreation management from The University of Toledo and a Ed.D. in educational leadership from The University of Akron.

Dennis Gruber

Dennis Gruber, chair for the health sciences department, clinical assistant professor and program director for athletic training, joined Ashland University in 2003. His areas of expertise include acute and chronic pain and qualitative research. Prior to his arrival at Ashland University, he was the assistant athletic director for sports medicine at Georgia Southern University from 1992 - 2003. While at Georgia Southern University, he oversaw the healthcare for over 400 student-athletes in thirteen intercollegiate sports. Many of his former athletic training students are practicing athletic trainers and are involved with institutions such as Clemson, Ole Miss, Georgia Southern University, The United States Naval Academy, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, and Western Michigan.
Dr. Gruber has been practicing athletic training in various settings since 1989. Dr. Gruber is an active member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. He has served on numerous committees at both the State and National levels concerning the practice of athletic training. Dr. Gruber received his B.S. in education from Youngstown State University in 1989. His M.S. in athletic training from Ohio University in 1990. His Ed.D. in curriculum studies from Georgia Southern University in 2004.
Dr. Gruber is a Youngstown, Ohio native. He currently resides in Ashland with his daughter Emily and son Ethan.

Dr. Randy Gearhart

Dr. Randy Gearhart

Dr. Randy Gearhart, professor in the health sciences department, joined Ashland University in 2003. His areas of expertise include exercise and sports. He holds a Bachelor of Science in natural science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a M.S. and Ph.D. in exercise physiology from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Dr. Glen Fincher II

Dr. Glen Fincher II

Dr. Glen Fincher II, associate professor of sport sciences, joined Ashland University in 1990. His areas of expertise include biostatistics and applied physiology, with an emphasis on physical fitness, strength training, and wellness. Dr. Fincher is faculty advisor to the Powerlifting club and a two time recipient of the Academic Mentor award. His B.S. and M.S. are from the University of Akron and his Ph.D. is from the University of Akron/Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Dr. Fincher is a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, an NSCA Certified Personal Trainer, and an ACSM certified Health Fitness Specialist.

Dr. David Vanata

Dr. David Vanata
RD, CSSD, LD

Dr. Vanata is the director, didactic program in Dietetics, and an associate professor in the family and consumer sciences department, foods and nutrition. He obtained his Ph.D. in human nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a M.S. in human nutrition from the Florida State University, and his B.S. in business from Stockton College, Pomona, N.J.  He is a Registered Dietitian (R.D.) and licensed in the state of Ohio.
