4/25/19 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland Theological Seminary will confer 10 different graduate degrees to 100 members of the 2018-19 graduating class at a Commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. The Commencement will be held in the John C. Myers Convocation Center on the Ashland University campus. This year’s commencement speaker is Dr. Wayne G. McCown, who will address the graduates with a speech titled “Where is the Hope?”
Dr. McCown has served as the interim vice president and executive dean of the Seminary since October 2018. Prior to his appointment, he served as adjunct professor at Northeastern Seminary for the last 10 years. McCown has had 18 years of service as a seminary dean, including seven years at Western Evangelical Seminary and another 11 years as the vice president and dean at Northeastern Seminary.
McCown also had three years of service as a church administrator and eight years as the vice president for academic affairs and academic dean/senior vice president and provost at Roberts Wesleyan College. In 2008, he was named provost emeritus of Roberts Wesleyan College and dean emeritus of Northeastern Seminary.
McCown received a Ph.D. from Union Theological Seminary in 1970, a Th.M. from Union Theological Seminary in 1967, an M.A. from University of Washington in 1966 and a B.D. from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1965.
He and his wife of 57 years, Dr. Darlene McCown (nurse educator and practitioner) have two sons: Mark Wayne McCown, head track coach at Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, N.Y., and Dr. Peter McCown, president of Elkhart County Foundation in Elkhart, Ind.; and enjoy their six grandchildren ages 16 to 22.
The degrees to be conferred this year at Ashland Theological Seminary include Doctor of Ministry, Master of Divinity, Master of Divinity in Chaplaincy, Master of Arts (Biblical Studies), Master of Arts in Black Church Studies, Master of Arts in Christian Ministries, Master of Arts in Practical Theology, Master of Arts in Spiritual Formation, Master of Arts in Counseling, Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Diploma in Youth Ministry.
