7/8/19 ASHLAND, Ohio – This summer, Ashland University is implementing a new and improved Wi-Fi networking system in the 15 separate residence hall buildings across its 135-acre main campus as well as the two residence halls located at the Schar College of Nursing and Health Sciences campus in Mansfield.
“Based on student feedback, the University decided to take action now in introducing a new and improved seamless internet system that will cover up to eight devices per person,” said Dr. Rob Pool, AU vice president of student affairs. “The new Wi-Fi will increase the internet speed, making it fast, easy and secure for streaming, gaming and, of course, studying; while providing students and parents with a trusted connection.”
Pool noted that the new system, which will be in place for this fall semester, will also make it much easier for students to register for classes and choose their housing each semester.
“The students of today are purchasing and bringing more wireless devices to campus. Many of these students who live on campus have high expectations to connect and stay connected to the AU wireless network,” he said. “It is not unreasonable to believe applicants and future students expect reliable, stable and fast residential wireless as a requirement in 2019 and beyond.”
Pool said research shows that students who live on a university campus consume 3.3 times more bandwidth than typical Wi-Fi users.
“As students embrace new technology, their expectations grow. Yearly surveys showed that AU’s ability to meet student needs was becoming a struggle. We were facing an aging network infrastructure in the residential areas across main campus as well as the Mansfield campus,” he said.
Pool said the new system features a 24-hour call system for customer service, as well as a person solely dedicated to customer service for the residence halls. “This Wi-Fi update is another small step in improving student satisfaction at AU,” he noted.
