Ashland University Institutes Paralegal Certificate Program

4/24/12 ASHLAND, Ohio --Ashland University’s Founders School of Continuing Education has instituted a weekend paralegal certificate program that will be offered on campus for the first time this summer.

“Paralegalism is one of the fastest growing careers in the country,” said Dwight McElfresh, dean of the Founders School. “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the number of paralegals will increase 28 percent between 2008 and 2018, much faster than the national average for all occupations.”

McElfresh said Ashland’s weekend program, which is tied to the Paralegal Certificate Course offered through The Center for Legal Studies, will offer live lecture classes on Saturday and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for six weekends. Classes will be in the Dauch College of Business and Economics on the Ashland University campus.

The summer session will be held June 16-17, 23-24, June 30-July 1, July 14-15, July 21-22 and July 28-29, while the fall semester session will be held Oct. 20-21, Oct. 27-28, Nov. 3-4, Nov. 10-11, Nov. 17-18 and Dec. 1-2.

The cost for the six-week program is $1,189 and the required textbooks can be purchased online through the Center for Legal Studies. There are no prerequisites to take the course.

McElfresh also noted that the national median salary for paralegals is currently $44,480 per year, while freelance paralegal professionals average significantly more across the board.

Students attending this program will be trained to interview witnesses, investigate complex fact patterns, research the law, prepare legal documents, and assist in preparing cases for courtroom litigation. The instruction is practice-oriented and relates to those areas of law in which paralegals are in most demand.
