Ashland University Jazz Orchestra Performs Free Concert

10/3/12 ASHLAND, OH – The award-winning Ashland University Jazz Orchestra will perform a wide variety of selections at a free public concert on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the Hawkins-Conard Student Center’s Eagles' Nest at 7:30 p.m.

Performing an exciting array of musical selections from classic Duke Ellington big band tunes to new arrangements of standard repertoire and everything in between, the Jazz Orchestra is led visiting professor Ashley L. Summers. Born on the West Coast of Canada and playing the double bass since the age of 15, Summer is also a composer and educator. She studied with jazz luminary Don Thompson and completed her undergraduate degree in Jazz Performance. Since 2000, she has been touring venues throughout the United States, from concert halls like the Kennedy Center for the Arts to Cleveland's Bop Stop.  Also an in-demand educator, she has served as director of IAJE Canada's "Jazzmobile" project since 2007.  She also frequently serves as an adjudicator, guest artist and clinician at festivals and universities throughout Canada and the U.S. After completing her master's degree at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, where she also served as an associate instructor, Summers relocated to the Cleveland area.

Members of the AU Jazz Orchestra include saxophonists Trent Kimball, Amanda Hall, Jessica Barnhouse, Shayne Smith and Stephen Matis; trombonists William McDonald, Dylan Pyanowski, Benjamin Marbut and Chris Prichard; along with Hannah Phillips, Eileen Navratil and Katie Metz on trumpet. The rhythm section consists of Kyle Gould, piano; Benjamin Schnell, bass; and Aaron Hill, drums.
