Ashland University Listed as Sixth Best Esports University in the Country

7/19/18 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University is the sixth best university in the country in which to pursue esports, according to Value Gamers, a website designed for those in the gaming industry.

“We are so pleased to be listed as one of the top universities in the country for esports and gaming,” said Josh Buchanan, head coach for the AU esports team. “We announced on Feb. 1 that we would be adding esports as our 23rd intercollegiate varsity sport and since then the program has been in a whirlwind of recruiting, preparing a new gaming center and answering numerous national and international media requests.”

On June 30, Value Gamers printed an analysis article that ranked the country’s top four-year universities with esports programs – evaluating them on seven crucial factors, including academics, campus, food quality, professors, location, nightlife and value. The ranking can be seen at:

Buchanan and his assistant coach, Travis Yang, have worked to build the program from the ground up, and they are offering scholarships of up to $4,000 to students who meet the academic and competitive requirements. Students will compete in games such as Overwatch, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, League of Legends, Hearthstone, Rocket League and Fortnite.

“We want to offer players the chance to continue honing their craft and improving their skills, while also having the chance to earn an exceptional education as they look forward to their post-college careers,” Buchanan said. “Much like the other sports on campus, esports provides a great combination of mental and physical skills, teamwork and organization that are crucial in meeting the standards of post-college life and making an impact in the world.”
