10/29/14 ASHLAND, Ohio – Two Ashland University MBA students have been recognized for their outstanding work and were named recipients of the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) scholarships by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) at AU’s Student IMA meeting on Oct. 15.

Those receiving the CMA scholarships were Sarah Urban of Kenya and Lisa Brainard from Medina.

Urban earned her bachelor’s degree from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in India and she worked as an assistant accountant with a tourist company in Nairobi Kenya. Before returning to Ashland University to concentrate on earning her MBA, she worked as a junior corporate accountant with a laboratory services company in Germany.

Brainard was a senior accountant at Things Remembered for six years and briefly served as a supervisor before leaving the company in 2013 to concentrate on completing her MBA.

As recipients of the CMA Scholarships, these students receive a comprehensive package of benefits enabling them to study for and take the CMA exam at no cost. The benefits also include a free IMA membership for three years.

“The Certified Management Accountant is the gold standard of certification in management accounting,” said Dr. Kris Parsons, associate professor of accounting and chair of the department of accounting and information systems at Ashland University. “It is unique among professional and academic credentials, designed specifically for accounting and financial management professionals in business.”

Parsons said achieving the CMA demonstrates professional expertise in financial planning, analysis, control, decision support and professional ethics. “These are essential skills sought after by successful organizations and their financial team leaders,” she said.

The IMA is committed to supporting the education of future accounting and finance professionals working in business and, as part of this effort, the IMA has instituted the CMA Scholarship program that honors top students by recognizing them with this scholarship.

Ashland University’s IMA student chapter is sponsored by the IMA Chapter in Canton. For information on graduate courses that cover the learning outcomes of the CMA exam, contact the MBA office at Ashland University at 1-888-MBA-CLAS.
