Ashland University Students Plan Informational Event for Empowering Worldwide Outreach

2/25/11 ASHLAND, OH -- To help raise awareness about Empowering Grandmothers while Generating Support (E.G.G.S.), a group of eight students in Ashland University's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) are coordinating an event on March 2 at 7 p.m. in Myers Convocation Center on the Ashland University campus.
E.G.G.S. was established in 2007 by members of Empowering Worldwide Outreach, a successful Ashland-based non-profit group. The short term goal of this program is to feed impoverished families, and give Kenyan grandmothers a chance to improve their lives and the lives of their grandchildren. A widespread AIDS pandemic has plagued Kenya for a number of years, and many of these grandmothers have children suffering from this horrific disease making them the primary caretaker of their grandchildren.

Hens are given to these grandmothers, and from there, they are able to sell the eggs and the poultry from the hens and share the benefits with other caregivers.  This not only provides them with hope, but also a sense of empowerment to control their future.

The informational event set to take place on March 2 will include a brief introduction by SIFE adviser and marketing professor Kristin Hovsepian, and a presentation and questions-and-answer session conducted by Kathy Ditlevson, president of Empowering Worldwide Outreach.

The students involved in this project have learned so much about this local non-profit group, and have become advocates of the overall E.G.G.S. mission.

"I love this project so much because it encompasses the overall mission of SIFE, which is giving a hand up, not a hand out," Hovsepian said. "Contributing to this noble cause, allows you to be part of the something great. It is all about the bigger picture, and providing not only immediate results, but also positive results in the future."

According to Ditlevson, the program is reducing depression, hopelessness, worry and shame.  "We're seeing the difference and it's awesome," she said.
