9/13/11 ASHLAND, OH -- The 2011-2012 College of Arts and Sciences Symposium "Against Global Indifference: Awakening to Action" will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 22, with a presentation by Kelsey Timmerman, author of the book, "Where Am I Wearing? A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories and People That Make Our Clothes."
The event, which is free and open to the public, is set for 7 p.m. in Hugo Young Theatre on the Ashland University campus.
Timmerman is a lively and engaging speaker who addresses the global garment industry and shares about his travels to many of the places where everyone's clothes are made. "I believe that if we reduce global issues to the stories of individual people, we can better see ourselves, our parents, our sons and daughters, and our hopes and struggles in one another," he said.
Timmerman said if people have trouble making sense of the global economy, if they feel guilty for buying clothes made somewhere other than the USA or if they wonder where this country's jobs went, there is one simple question and one simple act to help them understand -- "Where are you wearing, check the tag."
"This is not a question related to geography and clothes, but about the people who make our clothes and the texture of their lives," he said. "This quest is about the way we live and the way they live. Others make it and we have it made. There is a big, big difference."
Timmerman's book has gained worldwide attention and the reviews on his presentations have been outstanding. He has been speaking to students and groups across the country since 2009.
This event is co-sponsored by the Ashland University Honors Program. Information about the College of Arts and Science symposium is available at http://cas-symposium.blogspot.com<http://cas-symposium.blogspot.com/>.
