1/25/19 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University has designated a Nursing Mothers’ Room on campus for faculty, staff, students and visitors who are in need of a private space to express milk or nurse. The Nursing Mother’s Room is located on the second floor of Hawkins-Conard Student Center, next to the Commuter Lounge.
“The breastfeeding support program is part of Campus Wellness services, and was developed following careful planning and review of suggestions provided by employees,” said Dr. Deborah Sullivan, director of AU’s Campus Wellness. “The new room locks from the inside, has electrical outlets for breast pumps, a refrigerator, a sink and also provides a comfortable place to sit.”
Guests and visitors of the University will have access to the Nursing Mother’s Room through Safety Services, located on the first floor of the Student Center.
Sullivan said that research shows that supporting breastfeeding is a “win-win” for everyone.
“Breastfeeding is recommended by all major medical organizations as the optimal way to feed infants because of its significant health advantages,” Sullivan said. “Breastfeeding is also healthier for mothers by contributing to lower rates of breast cancer and improving recovery from pregnancy.”
She said she is proud that Ashland University has joined the hundreds of other establishments across America who provide support for breastfeeding. “We are pleased that our breastfeeding employees, visitors and students can successfully merge their important priorities of family and work through onsite support, and urge supervisors, faculty and co-workers to lend their support.”
Sullivan added that this resource for new mothers is part of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010, the federal health care reform law that requires employers to provide nursing mothers with reasonable break time and a dedicated room to express milk for up to one year following the birth of a child.
