12/16/13 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland University employees and students have partnered with the Salvation Army, Associated Charities and the Ashland City Police Department to help make the holiday season better for many in the community.
“These community initiatives support the University mission and specifically the core value of character development - compassion, service to others, leadership and good citizenship,” said Sue Heimann, vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Ashland University. “Our students, staff and faculty have a big heart and we simply provide the opportunities to show it.”
Eighty-eight "Angels" were selected by students, faculty and staff members who participated in the annual Salvation Army Angel Tree in the AU Student Affairs office this Christmas season. Each “Angel” designates a child for whom the Ashland University community bought new clothing and toys. These gifts were delivered to the Salvation Army on Dec. 9. AU has partnered with the Salvation Army on this project since 2003.
In addition, 82 new stuffed animals were delivered to the Ashland Police Department on Dec. 9 as the first cycle of the annual Student Senate Teddy Bear Drive. The police department in turn gives the stuffed animals to children during traumatic/crisis situations to provide a small sense of comfort.
The Teddy Bear Drive was launched at the fall Family Weekend event and will continue during spring semester through AU's Sibs and Kids Weekend. Sophomore Class President Sean Honaker chairs the Teddy Bear Drive Committee and Ashland University’s Student Senate has partnered with the Ashland Police Department on this service project since 2003.
Last month, AU G.I.V.S (Ashland University Gets Involved with Volunteer Service) partnered with Associated Charities to host a “Stock the Sleigh” event on campus to help stock their Santa Room where parents are invited to select gifts for their children. A total of 25 individuals, student organizations and/or AU offices sponsored a donation level ranging from stocking stuffers to large scale gifts such as video games and gift cards for infants and teens and these donations were delivered to Associated Charities the week of Dec 2.
