9/10/19 ASHLAND, Ohio – Ashland residents Bob and Jan Archer are challenging people across the state of Ohio to join them in support of Ashland University’s campus facilities and grounds.
“We have established the Archer Challenge Grant, which means we will match dollar for dollar every gift given to AU as part of this project up to a total of $1 million,” said Bob Archer. “Jan and I see this as a way for individuals and businesses to join us in helping Ashland University maintain and improve its outstanding campus facilities.”
Archer said as a member of the AU Board of Trustees, he is aware of a list of projects that should be completed on campus. These projects include campus beautification items such as sidewalks, exterior lighting and landscaping; maintenance items such as parking lots and roof repair; and capital improvement items such as renovations to the Chapel as well as the Physical Education Center lobby and locker rooms.
“Jan and I feel very strongly that there is a real need to invest in the physical campus – it could become a negative if we don’t come together as a community to do something financially meaningful to support AU,” Archer said. “We need to maintain and upgrade our facilities in order to continue to draw students to our campus, which has wide appeal for the beauty of its grounds and landscaping.”
Rick Ewing, vice president of operations and planning, said, “There are many things that we need to do, and things we would like to do. This initiative will provide a much-needed boost to accelerate our ability to repair, replace and beautify the campus.”
According to AU President Dr. Carlos Campo, the Archer Challenge Grant will give everyone an opportunity to support the University, whether it is in a large or small way.
Campo thanked Bob and Jan Archer for their ongoing philanthropy at the University. “The Archer’s gift will help keep the AU campus one of Ohio’s jewels. I am certain that others in the Ashland area will come forward and respond to this challenge because they realize what an asset Ashland University is to this city and the region,” he said.
Campo also stated that many community members enjoy AU’s facilities such as the theater, lecture halls, sports facilities and convocation center-- and even just as a great place to walk their dogs or wander with family members.
