Community Asked to Help Fight Hunger with Art

11/4/10 ASHLAND, OH -- Ashland University's Coburn Art Gallery, the Art Department and the Center for Community Service are asking community organizations to join Ashland University student organizations in participating in a flag decorating contest to raise money for the Ashland County Food Bank.

"It is time to get creative and raise money for the Ashland County Food Bank by creating a work of art on an 18" x 24" canvas," said Cynthia C. Petry, director of the Coburn Art Gallery. "The theme for the flag creation is open, so people can use their imagination."

Petry said 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of the art flags will benefit the Ashland County Food Bank. She noted that the fundraiser is open to individual artists-students, amateur or professional, community groups and organizations.

Those participating from community groups or organizations may pick up their canvas from Nov. 8 to Nov. 19 at the Coburn Art Gallery located on the first floor of the Center for the Arts building. Student organizations can pick up their canvas at the Student Life Office in the Hawkins-Conard Student Center.

The completed flags are due on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011, with those from the community turning them into the Coburn Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts building and students turning theirs into the Student Life Office.

The art flags will be displayed at the Ashland University Coburn Art Gallery from Feb. 10 to 27, 2011, where they will become part of a silent auction to raise funds for the Ashland County Food Bank.

"An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Feb. 10, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., in which a People's Choice award will be presented to the winning group or organization as voted on by the patrons of the Coburn Gallery at the opening reception," Petry said. "A limited number of art flags will be available, so don't delay in picking up your flag."
