11/11/16 ASHLAND, Ohio – The J.M. Smucker Company, based in Orrville, Ohio, has established an Endowed Scholarship in Business at Ashland University.
The scholarship was established with a $50,000 gift that will be awarded to undergraduate students in AU’s Dauch College of Business and Economics based on academic merit and financial need. The recipients must maintain a 3.0 GPA and the award may be renewed annually provided recipients maintain the requirements and be in good standing within the Ashland University community.
“The J.M. Smucker Company has a longstanding relationship with Ashland University and we are proud to continue to invest in the University and its students,” said John Denman, vice president for HR Operations at The J.M. Smucker Company. “Several of our employees are Ashland University graduates and we continue to partner with AU in many ways, including an internship program; a scholarship to the undergraduate accounting and finance program; Smucker employees serving as members on several AU advisory boards; employees enrolled in MBA classes; and, now, the establishment of the Smucker Endowed Scholarship in Business,” Denman said.
AU President Dr. Carlos Campo said endowed scholarships are important to the success of Ashland University.
“We have a wonderful relationship with this prestigious company and we are so pleased that Smucker is providing the funding for this endowed scholarship to help students be able to attend Ashland University,” Campo said. “It is a gift that keeps on giving year after year and will continue to benefit AU students.”
According to Denman, The J.M. Smucker Company was formed in 1897 by a dedicated, honest, forward-looking businessman, Jerome Monroe Smucker. Today, Smucker is a leading marketer and manufacturer of consumer food and beverage products and pet food and pet snacks in North America.
“The J.M. Smucker Company has always had a special commitment to education and a passion for assisting deserving young men and women with an opportunity to pursue a degree in higher education. This endowed scholarship further demonstrates this commitment and will continue assisting students with their educational endeavors,” Denman said.
Ashland University Endowed Scholarships help to provide deserving students of modest means with an Ashland education, and enrich the Ashland experience by ensuring a diverse student body. Approximately 500 named endowed scholarships have been established since 1980. When a gift is endowed, the initial principal is invested and awards are made from the annual earnings. This provides a level of current support, while providing a reliable source of funds for the future.
