Dr. Paul Hyman, Associate Professor of Biology/Toxicology, AU alumnae Carly Young (Biology 2013) and Ashley Franks (Biology/Chemistry 2015), and collaborators at the U.S. Department of Agriculture have published a paper in the October issue of FEMS Microbiology Letters.  The paper, titled “The endolysin from the Enterococcus faecalis bacteriophage VD13 and conditions stimulating its lytic activity,” reports the results of studies on a protein that can kill pathogenic bacteria. This protein, called an endolysin, breaks down the outer layers of some types of bacteria causing the cells to burst open and die.  The endolysin they studied can kill both antibiotic sensitive and antibiotic resistant bacteria and represents a potential alternative treatment for antibiotic resistant infections.
