William Vaughan, Philosophy Professor, delivered a paper “The Aesthetic ‘Kantgeist’ in Art History,” before the West Virginia Philosophical Society at West Virginia Wesleyan University in Buckhannon, West Virginia, Oct. 15, 2016. Kant’s aesthetics played a foundational role in the development of art history. This paper reviewed the achievements of Neo-Kantianism with regard to aesthetics, culminating in the work of Cassirer and the foundational German art historians Wölfflin and Panofsky. Then the paper defended how and why Neo-Kantian aesthetics became unsustainable in the face of contemporary critiques.
