Ashland University Honors Faculty Member with Taylor Teaching Award

Ashland University’s Joan Berry Kalamas, professional instructor in business management in the Dauch College of Business and Economics, is the recipient of AU’s 2018 Taylor Excellence in Teaching Award. AU Provost Dr. Eun-Woo Chang presented the award at AU’s Academic Honors Convocation on Sunday, April 22, in the Jack and Deb Miller Chapel.

The award, first presented in 1997, was endowed by former Jeromesville residents the late Edward and Louaine Taylor as a way of supporting high quality teaching at Ashland University.

Ashland University’s Emerson Scholars Receive Recognition

Ten Emerson Scholars from Ashland University’s Dauch College of Business and Economics received recognition and a scholarship at the Emerson Scholar Awards luncheon held on the Ashland University campus.

This year’s group of ten students who will be seniors in the fall include Vanessa Byers, a marketing major from Loudonville, Ohio, who is a 2015 graduate of Loudonville High School; Holly Damron, an accounting major from New London, Ohio, who is a 2015 graduate of New London High School; Keagn Frey, a marketing major from Bellevue, Ohio, who is a 2015 graduate of Bellevue High School; Kyle Gerber, a supply chain management and business management major from Winesburg, Ohio, who is a 2015 graduate of Hiland High School; Esther Goodell, a marketing major from Amherst, Ohio, who is a 2016 graduate of Marion L. Steele High School; Dan Morell, a supply chain management and business management major from Brecksville, Ohio, who is a 2015 graduate of Brecksville Broadview High School; Trevor Resse, a finance major from Lisbon, Ohio, who is a 2016 graduate of David Anderson High School; Ewelina Siwik, an international business major from Streetsboro, Ohio, who is a 2015 graduate of Streetsboro High School; Lauren Taylor, a marketing major from Wooster, Ohio, who is a 2015 graduate of Wooster High School; and Michael Ward, a finance major from Lexington, Ohio, who is a 2015 graduate of Lexington High School.

Ashland University Student Receives Regional Scholarship

Bay Village resident Hannah Wittkopf, a junior at Ashland University, is one of the recipients of the 2018 Ohio Regional Council Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) scholarship. She is one of three scholarship recipients.

Wittkopf is majoring in accounting and is the president of the Institute of Management Accountants chapter for Ashland University. She is the daughter of Paul and Carol Wittkopf of Bay Village and is a 2014 graduate of Bay Village High School.

Dr. Lucille Ford Inducted into OFIC Hall of Excellence

Ashland native Dr. Lucille Ford was selected as a 2018 inductee into The Ohio Foundation of Independent Colleges’ (OFIC) Hall of Excellence and she attended the induction ceremony held in Columbus last week.

An emeritus trustee of Ashland University, Dr. Ford served the University as provost, dean and professor, and also received a degree from Ashland Theological Seminary in 1995. Ford, who was nominated by Ashland University, was one of two inductees into the Hall of Excellence this year.

Millersburg Native and Ashland University Student Awarded The J.M. Smucker Co. Annual Scholarship

Makayla Palm, an Ashland University junior majoring in accounting, was named The J.M. Smucker Co. Scholarship award winner for the academic year 2017-1018 at AU’s Student Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Meeting. Palm, a resident of Millersburg, is a 2016 graduate of West Holmes High School.

The $2,500 scholarship was presented to Palm by Joyce Badertscher, lead analyst, Supply Chain Finance, for The J.M. Smucker Co.

Ashland University Officials Sign Academic Collaboration with University of Haifa Officials

Ashland University President Dr. Carlos Campo and Dean of the Dauch College of Business and Economics Dr. Elad Granot last week signed an academic collaboration agreement with officials from the University of Haifa in Haifa, Israel.

Campo and Granot entered into an agreement with University of Haifa President Ron Robin and Rector Gustavo Mesch that will establish a joint MBA program in entrepreneurship. The opportunity to study at an Israeli campus is expected to generate significant interest among the student body of Ashland University.

Ashland University Student to Compete in National Collegiate Pistol Championships

For the second year in a row, Ashland University student Jessica Syme, a senior from Westfield Township in Medina County, Ohio, will be competing in the National Intercollegiate Pistol Championships that will be held at Fort Benning, Ga., March 17-20. Syme, who is an accounting and finance major at Ashland University, is a 2015 graduate of Ohio Virtual Academy.

Syme will be one of 20 young ladies from colleges and universities across the nation competing in women’s events based on their scores during the sectional competition held at Ohio State University on Feb. 10. Syme will be competing in the Sport Pistol event after placing third in that competition at the sectionals. She is ranked 15th on the list of national competitors for Women’s Sport Pistol.

Ashland University Lecture to Feature John Beckett

The Gordon E. Heffern Lecture on Christian Ethics in Business at Ashland University this year will feature a lecture by John D. Beckett, chairman of R.W. Beckett Corp. and author of the book, “Loving Monday: Succeeding in business without selling your soul.”

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held Wednesday, March 21, at noon in the John C. Myers Convocation Center on the AU campus. Ashland University and In His Steps Foundation are sponsoring the event, which is hosted by AU’s Richard and Sandra J. Dauch College of Business and Economics.

Ashland University Dauch College Offers Free Tax Preparation and Electronic Filing

Faculty and students in the Ashland University Dauch College of Business and Economics are offering free tax preparation through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The program is designed to assist in tax preparation for those who are eligible and allows for free e-file of federal and state returns.

“This is one more way in which the university fulfills its mission to serve our community and to allow our students to grow as scholars, professionals and human beings,” said Dr. Elad Granot, dean of the Dauch College of Business and Economics.

Ashland University Event to Focus on Cryptocurrencies

Ashland University’s Morgan Center for Entrepreneurial Studies is hosting an event that will feature Ben Wortman speaking on the topic of “Cryptocurrencies.” The event will be held Thursday, Feb. 8, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Room 115 of the Dauch College of Business and Economics on the AU campus.

Over the past few months, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have been a trending topic in global news. It is also a topic that very few people fully understand. This event will provide those attending with a better understanding of the innovation that could change our modern economy, and explain what the hype is all about.
